University of Michigan - Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine

Responsibilities* 

To work with the veterinary clinical faculty, veterinary residents, and other licensed veterinary technicians to provide and help coordinate the medical care of research animals within the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM); to serve as a liaison between the veterinary clinicians and research laboratory personnel; and to maintain complete and accurate medical records.  Starting salary will be between $20-25/hr. Additionally, the department provides benefits that equal out to another 30-35% of the salary in the form of comprehensive medical insurance, dental coverage, retirement matching, life insurance, disability benefits, and other support and benefits that can be reviewed at benefits.umich.edu  


Duties:  

Assisting in the implementation and coordination all ULAM veterinary medical care protocols concerning maintenance of animal health as well as prevention and treatment of disease in laboratory animals. This often will involve communication with scientists and staff within the University of Michigan research laboratories. Providing direct assistance to the veterinary clinical faculty and veterinary residents in the diagnosis and treatment of disease Maintaining animal records to ensure compliance with regulatory agency guidelines Attending and actively participating in team meetings and clinical rounds Training laboratory personnel in proper animal handling and restraint, as well as various medical techniques Sharing equally with other licensed veterinary technician team members to provide consistent care to all animals on weekends and holidays Required 


Qualifications* 

Associates degree in animal health technology. 1-3 years of experience  Must have an active Veterinary Technical license in the United States and has passed the VTNE exam and be licensed in Michigan within 6 months of hire. Ability to work independently as needed while still working courteously and effectively with others. Ability and willingness to work with many species including but not limited to mice, rats, rabbits, ferrets, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, cattle and nonhuman primates. Significant experience related to animal handling, methods of blood collection and drug administration, and anesthesiology. Experience conducting diagnostic tests including hematology, clinical chemistry, and endo- and ecto-parasitology exams. Basic computer skills (word-processing, spreadsheets, and e-mails). Work Schedule Provide work coverage until 5pm during the weekdays. Experienced LVT (licensed veterinary technician) is needed for a busy, progressive, single doctor practice in the Port Huron/Lexington area. A current Veterinary Technician Certificate is required. Experience is strongly preferred but is not required.  


Our practice philosophy is based on compassionate care for our client’s pets and striving to provide the best possible outcomes for all of our patients. We routinely work with local rescue groups and humane societies to provide care that some pets may not receive otherwise.  


The clinic provides routine and well patient services (vaccinations, spays/neuters, dentistry) for canine and feline patients along with radiography, ultrasonography, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery (TPLOs, patellar luxation corrections, FHOs and fractures) and management of internal medicine cases.  


The clinic utilizes DVMax software and is equipped with a full Idexx Lab Suite (ProCyte Dx, Two Catalyst Ones, Sedivue Dx, Coag Dx, VetStat), Innovet/Idexx digital radiography, ultrasound, Cardell Touch Anesthesia monitors, ultrasonic and Henry Schein Pro dental units.  


The candidate must be skilled in animal restraint, anesthesia and surgical assisting, dentistry, radiology, venipuncture, calculating drug dosages and IV fluid rates, microscopy/lab procedures, surgical pack management, IV catheter placement and be able to provide an excellent standard of care for hospitalized patients.  


The position requires availability on some weekends and holidays (rotating patient care responsibilities); however, the majority of hours are scheduled during the week (Mon-Fri from 8a to 6p).  


Salary will be competitive based on experience and technical skills.
